01 / ABOUT THE PLACE

About this place

At SAKIYA CAFE, start with marupan, the bakery’s signature bread. Made with Japanese-grown wheat and wholemeal flour, it contains no butter or eggs and is made with honey and rice oil. The rolls are notably substantial and chewy. For a light meal, try one filled with a smoked sausage. The simple ketchup-and-wholegrain-mustard version pairs the springy bread with a sausage that snaps as you bite. A generous topping of sauerkraut adds a refreshing tang, while red cheddar brings a pleasing saltiness and richness. Choose whichever combination appeals.

Thick-cut toast made with the café’s sliced bread offers another way to vary a meal. For a simple taste of the bread, choose salted butter with rock salt; for a sweet-and-savoury pairing, try Hokkaido azuki bean paste with unsalted butter and rock salt. There is also tuna salad with pickles, capers and onion. Or try avocado toast on cereal bread made with oats, sunflower seeds and flaxseed. Topped with a lightly spiced avocado paste, it makes a fresher, lighter take on toast.

Some diners have enjoyed a BLTC sandwich for lunch, noting the crunch of the toasted bread and the combination of bacon, lettuce, tomato and cheese. The menu also includes a tuna melt, filled with tuna salad, tomato and 2 kinds of cheese. It can be served hot, with the cheese melted, or cold. For something more substantial, consider a croque monsieur with roast ham and cheese béchamel sauce, or a croque madame topped with a fried egg. Diners have also said they enjoyed the croque madame.

For breakfast or a pause after a meal, pair a baked treat with coffee. The coffee roll is filled with a Kilimanjaro coffee layer and espresso powder; it is not too sweet, and cacao nibs add a bitter edge. Coffee is available as a blend brewed to order by hand, as well as a refreshing Americano made by brewing a light roast with extra water. Breakfast is served, and both eat-in and takeaway are available. From choosing a bread for breakfast to sharing toast or sandwiches at lunch, the menu makes it easy to explore different breads and combinations.
